D-EYE Smartphone-based Retinal Imaging System

Did you know that there is a super cool device out there that can allow you to capture high-definition photos and videos of the ocular fundus with your iPhone?! It is called the D-EYE Smartphone-based Retinal Imaging System.

It is so easy to use too! It uses your smartphone’s LED light source and turns it into a portable retinal camera in which you can save, store, and video images, show them to your patients, and send the photos to other providers.

How does it work?

The D-EYE system comes with a bumper (case) that fits around your phone. The magnetic lens then covers the camera aperture and light source. The system redirects the camera’s light to eliminate corneal glare. When positioned about 1cm from the pupil, the D-EYE has a field of view similar to a traditional ophthalmoscope (5-8 degrees undilated; 20+ degrees dilated).

The examiner then uses the D-EYE App on the smartphone display to enter patient information, focus the retinal camera, and record, archive, view, and transmit images. The D-EYE can account for various refractive errors to compensate between -10D myopia and +5D of hyperopia. This device is also FDA approved and uses a HIPAA compliant database.

What is it used for?

D-EYE is great for documenting retinal, vessel, and optic nerve diseases in cases where the examiner does not have access to a retinal camera. It is also perfect for use at vision/health screenings, mission trips, nursing home visits, etc. And its pretty much just super fun to use on all your friends and family!
